In young skin Extra-Cellular Matrix (ECM) is partly composed of collagen fibers formed by correct association of collagen fibrils. The efficient binding of collagen fibrils is initiated and regulated by some components including small molecules called proteoglycans (from their chemical composition: a protein-sugar complex) that attach themselves to the collagen fibrils and link them together, reducing the space in-between the fibrils, to form functional collagen fibers.
Among the small proteoglycans, one singles itself out: lumican, that is involved in the synthesis of the collagen fibers (fibrillogenesis) and consequently in the skin resistance to traction. LS has carried out a fundamental research study and has identified that its synthesis decreases with age, resulting in a loss of organization of the collagen fibers.
To specifically target this innovative tracer of ECM functionality, LS has designed DERMICAN™, a synthetic tetrapeptide, singled out for its original anti-age biological action particularly via lumican metabolism.
